A Message from the President

Welcome to the BlueBird Theatre, home of the Orangeburg Part-Time Players and Jr. Orangeburg Part-Time Players!

When COVID-19 shuttered our doors in March 2020, we were just two weeks away from opening night for “Mamma Mia!” which was shaping up to be a fantastic sell-out production. It was heartbreaking to see all of the hard work the cast and crew had put in for more than two months creating that show go to waste.

Through the dedication and ingenuity of our board members and OPTP volunteers, we managed to keep the BlueBird “open” until we were able to welcome the public back for trivia nights, movie screenings and rentals in fall 2020.

As venues were allowed to reopen to larger audiences, the postponed “Mamma Mia!” was recast, revamped and staged this past March. Seating was limited to half capacity, and every performance sold out. What a fantastic show it was to reopen our stage! The energy, the costumes, the cast – it was absolutely perfect and so much fun. Having our community join us in celebrating the OPTP’s return to the stage was thrilling.

“Clue: On Stage” was produced in June – and it was another outstanding, sold-out show featuring a tremendously talented cast and crew.

In the midst of that production, we held auditions for our summer kids’ show, “Mary Poppins, Jr.” More than 30 kids auditioned and were cast in this fun adaptation of the Disney classic.

Just as we were building up our momentum and felt like we were getting back on solid ground, on July 4 we discovered our beloved theater home had been broken into and more than $5,000 in vital production equipment stolen. It was another blow, and happened on the heels of our old air conditioning unit finally giving out. We were completely devastated.

However, in the days and weeks that followed, we experienced something that makes us so grateful and proud to be part of the Orangeburg community.

Countless friends and neighbors came to our aid. The band Resurrection–A Journey Tribute purchased a new projector for us. A laptop was donated in memory of Karen Kinsey. Longtime OPTP member Megan Herring donated five brand-new Vera Bradley handbags for a Facebook raffle that raised more than $2,000 for the group. Businesses and individuals wrote checks and gave cash as they were able to contribute to the cause. Fogle’s Piggly Wiggly donated $5,000, which helps us get closer to our $25,000 HVAC repair goal. All of them helped make this show possible.

“Thank you” doesn’t fully encompass just how grateful we are for the outpouring of support we have received from the community.

As a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization celebrating our 41st year, we depend on the continued support of our community.

The JrOPTP offers a creative outlet for kids to learn about teamwork and commitment while developing their talents and building lasting friendships with those who share their passion for the performing arts.

Through the OPTP, adults get the chance to create magic on the stage for others to enjoy.

This organization is a labor of love. When you attend a performance, you are helping us be able to continue sharing our love of live theater. Thank you! We hope to see you soon at the BlueBird!
